Cognition (fka Quester and MeaningMaster) is a natural language search engine technology.
The CTO and Founder of Cognition, Ph.D. Kathleen Dahlgren lead a team of 12 Ph.D. Linguists, 19 Masters and many computer scientists to build out the largest computational dictionary known to exist today. The Cognition dictionary is twice the size of WordNet, has over 350,000 word stems (base forms of a word), 370,000 concepts, 14,000 ambiguous words (the most frequently used words in the English language) and over 90,000 multiple-word phrases.
The technology was developed over the years with partners, grants and investments from the IBM Scientific Center, the Army Research Laboratory, Motorola, the Army Logistics Integration Agency and other private investors. A patent on the technology was awarded in 1998 (with 30 patent claims).
Investors: Tech Coast Angeles and Starboard Venture Partners (Bill Collins and John Osborne)
